Chapter Eleven

“Where the hell are you?” Aiden demanded of Smith. He kicked the door to his bedroom shut. “You were supposed to arrive this evening!”

“Sorry! I got held up with those new hires, but I’ll be there by dawn. Just relax, okay and—”

“We found a body.”

“What?” Shock. Then an admiring whistle. “Already? She is that fast? Damn, man. I had no idea she’d be that good. But how are you? You sure it’s your brother—”

“No, it’s not my brother. It was Melanie Rodgers. She was murdered in the woods near my cabin.”

“You are fucking kidding me.”

Like he’d kid about murder. “Stabbed to death. The knife was left in her chest. Tony said she counted seven wounds.” His left hand raked through his hair. “Not even here twenty-four hours, and someone is dead. First Austin’s old room is ransacked, and now this.” No wonder Barrett wanted Aiden to get his ass out of town. Aiden could hardly blame the guy. I feel like the freaking Grim Reaper.

“Wait, wait, wait. His room was ransacked? When? Dammit, why am I not in the loop? You understand you can text me when shit happens, right?”

“Your ass would have been in the loop if you were here.” He paced to the window. Glared out at the darkness below. A darkness that he could feel inside of himself. This place always did that to him. Put him on edge. Pushed him. Pulled up the worst parts of himself.

Don’t you get tired of following rules? Fuck them. Fuck them all. His brother’s voice whispered through his mind. A temptation. He’d been so good at tempting. We can do whatever we want. No one will ever be able to touch us. Together, we are unstoppable.

“Are you okay?” Smith asked him.

His chest wasn’t the one littered with stab wounds. “Fine. I wasn’t the target.”

“And your doc? She’s good?”

His grip tightened on the phone. “She wasn’t the target, either.”

“You got eyes on her?”

“She’s in the room next door. She’s safe.” I’ve got her.

“Fuck.” An exhale.

Yes, indeed. Fuck. “I want you to get me Melanie’s phone records.”

“What else?”

No questions about legality because, yeah, this wasn’t the first time he’d asked Smith to break rules. “I want her email exchanges. Every message she’s sent across every social media platform. I want her bank info. I want to know why the hell someone killed her on my property.”

“You think it’s linked to your brother.”

“It has to be.” The day she discovered he was digging up the past again, Melanie died. “She was involved with him back then, and she was the one who kept telling everyone that he’d just run away, even when the evidence clearly said otherwise.”

“Like she was trying to cover something up?”

“Yes.” His suspicion, but he’d never been able to get proof.

“On it. And I will be there at dawn.” A pause. “But, maybe you need to get out of the cabin? I mean, what if the killer is watching you?”

Let him watch. Let him come for me. Wasn’t that what he wanted? To get the bastard in front of him? Payback.
